Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall consisting of a gold quadrant bearing a scarlet Indian sun symbol within a border of alternating black and white squares forming four pyramidal sides, all between two semi-circular gold scrolls folded back at each side and inscribed at the top EXCELLENCE and in base IN SUPPORT all in black letters.

Symbolism
The Indian or Zia sun symbol, representing energy and provision, was suggested by the New Mexico state flag.  The geometric black and white design style was used by the early Indians of the area symbolizing the present location of the organization at Albuquerque, New Mexico.  White is symbolic of operations.  The combined colors of black and white symbolize memory, wisdom, fortitude and operational success.  Gold (buff) and scarlet are colors used for Support.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 13 November 1972.
